CareSource Indiana Provides Members At-Home Opioid Drug Disposal Solution

Free Benefit to Reduce Risk of Accidental Poisonings, Opioid Abuse and Overdose

INDIANAPOLIS – June 2, 2021 – Last month, CareSource, a nationally recognized nonprofit health plan, announced partnership with DisposeRx, an at-home, eco-friendly medication disposal solution, as part of its commitment to prevent opioid misuse, diversion and accidental poisonings. This partnership is now extended to Indiana CareSource members to allow safe disposal of medications that are no longer needed.

DisposeRx packets contain a blend of materials that allow unused or expired medications to be disposed of safely. Patients or members simply add water and the DisposeRx powder to their medication in the prescription bottle and shake for 30 seconds. This will chemically and physically sequester the medication’s active ingredients in a viscous polymer gel made from materials FDA-approved for oral medications helping to neutralize the effects of the medications and to render them unusable.

“DisposeRx makes at-home medication disposal convenient and easy for our members,” explained Steve Smitherman, CareSource Indiana Market President. “Members can prevent their leftover opioids from being diverted in their community, avoid polluting the water supply and most importantly, prevent accidental poisonings. Effective home disposal of leftover opioids is a health and safety goal we share with our members.”

CareSource offers DisposeRx at-home medication packets to Indiana and Ohio members and also plans to expand the availability to their other markets throughout the year. CareSource members do not need a prescription to obtain DisposeRx packets.

“We are excited for the growth of our program with CareSource into Indiana and additional markets,” said William Simpson, President and Chief Executive Officer at DisposeRx. “CareSource members are very fortunate that their health plan is offering benefits and education programs, such as DisposeRx, to help them and their families safe.”
